Severe weather events cost the United States some $93 billion in damage in 2023, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. These events included four major floods, including one event in Florida.
Floods represent a major weather threat for Florida residents. Due to the state’s coastal geography and low elevation, flooding is a danger at any time of the year. Low-lying communities and regions with poor drainage are especially vulnerable to flash floods, storm surges, or floods resulting from excessive rainfall. Floridians can gather all pertinent information regarding their flood risk by learning the location of all nearby creeks and rivers and understanding their property’s elevation. Individuals can use resources such as floridadisaster.org and access regional flood maps. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Map Service Center provides similar services. Floridians can enter their address at floodsmart.gov and receive an overall flood-risk report. While these services can provide residents with greater insight into their overall risk for flood-related hazards, residents should also follow local weather reports and river level forecasts. After a flood, property owners may need to contact a disaster restoration specialist to begin repairing damage.
